Constant rainfall can be a particular issue in some parts of the world, particularly for geographical areas which are flat, surrounded by stooping land that is higher up. In such countries as USA and UK, most individual’s gardens are flat, usually covered by grass. This excess rainfall can therefore lead to a build up and accumulation of water at the lowest point. If a person were to have a garden pond, this would be the lowest point within the garden and therefore the most susceptible point for flooding to occur.
Not only is flooding bad due to the disruption of aesthetic aspects, because garden ponds are specimens of beauty, but pond flooding can often lead to the contamination of pond water which cannot be dealt with via a pond filter, with most garden owners potentially using specialised soils/treatments/chemical and high levels of nutrients on their garden. Ultimately this can be damaging to the equilibrium of the aquatic pond environment, with the high risk of pond fish and plants being harmed.
Therefore it’s extremely important that the garden/pond owner puts appropiate measures into place to prevent this situation from occurring, upon periods of intense, continuous rainfall.
There are a few systems that can be put into place to help solve this problem. Firstly, implementing an overflow break point would be highly beneficial. An overflow break-point is a measured depth that once exceeded by the level of water, will divert the excess liquid to a nearby drainage pipe via a submersible pond pump (Image below), usually connected to the house. If rainfall is very persistent and subsequently, more water is being accumulated than being drained over time, this measure at least provides time to remove any fish from the pond, to put them in another water container/tank.
Another preventative measure is to build a upwards slope around the pond, in depth of around 15cm. This will preliminary prevent a large amount of water entering the pond whilst fish and plants can be removed.
The final preventative measure would be to condition the surrounding ground/grass around the pond, so that efficient water absorption and removal is possible. This could be through correcting ground height issues and using more water absorbing soil.
